Japan earthquake and tsunamiOn March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake of magnitude 9.0 struck off the coast of Japan, triggering a devastating tsunami that caused widespread destruction and loss of life.

The quake was the largest ever recorded in Japan’s history, and it also ranks as one of the five strongest earthquakes in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900.

The tsunami generated by the earthquake reached heights of up to 40 meters (131 feet) in some places along the northeastern coast of Honshu, the main island of Japan, causing extensive damage to coastal communities and infrastructure.

The disaster left over 15,896 people dead or missing, and many more injured or displaced.

In addition, severe radiation leaks at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant added to the complexity and long-term impact of this catastrophic event on Japan and its people.
